“The world was in a dream before the War, but now it’s woken up and said goodbye to it…”
In August, we remember the impacts of WW1 as our “Rock the AU” theme.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of when the Great War began. It seemed fitting (however somber) to mark and honor the occasion by making WW1 our “Rock the AU” theme for this month.
While so much of Downton Abbey and Tom and Sybil’s story took place during WW1, there are also many unexplored stories and missing moments to be written and talked about, as well as AU’s to be created. What if Tom couldn’t get away and was somehow forced into serving in the army? Or what if he was arrested for being a contentious objector? What if he and Sybil met by chance while working together at a different convalescent home? What if their romance began so much sooner, while she was training in York? What if she went to France to serve as a nurse, and they exchanged letters back and forth? There are many possibilities, both within the realm of the show and beyond. And if you’re more comfortable writing “modern AU”, what if Tom or Sybil were doing research on WW1, and traveled to the places of their ancestors to get a better idea of what they went through one-hundred years ago?
Whatever idea ignites your imagination, I hope you will consider sharing it during this month’s Rock the AU. AND REMEMBER! “EAST Alliance Day” takes place on Sunday, Aug. 3, the Sunday closest to Aug. 4, when not only did Tom and Sybil first hold hands (and Sir Anthony was going to propose to Edith), but when the announcement about the War was made. How did that impact our favorite characters?

Tom Branson was born in Ireland, his family emigrated to America when he was five, he joined the Marines and after he left the service he played the stocks and became a self-made millionaire.
Now he lives a playboy lifestyle in Monaco and investigate’s and solves crimes with his two rivals and best friends Matthew Crawley and Anthony Strallan.
Matthew Crawley was born in London and raised by his doctor parents, (Reginald and Isobel) he bucked the trend and became a QC Barrister, he is top in his field. After his wealthy fiancé (Levinia) dies in a hit and run. Levinia bequeathed her wealth to him. The culprit is brought to justice but the judge gives him a more lenient sentence.
Matthew is so disgusted with the British judicial system, that he up-sticks and moves to Monaco where he brings bad guys to justice with his two best friends Anthony Strallan and Tom Branson.
Anthony Strallan is from one of the oldest and affluent family’s in England, he was born in India. Not long after his birth, his grandfather died (Sir Christopher Strallan) and his father and mother had to move back to Yorkshire to take over the running of the family estate Locksley. He is the last in line to inherit the title and estate.
After the tragic death of his wife Maud (During Childbirth), moved to Monaco and investigate’s and solves crime’s with his two best friends and rivals Tom Branson and Matthew Crawley.
The Crawley Sister’s have been taken hostage. The kidnappers have told the girls father (Lord Robert Crawley) not to inform the police, so he gets in contact with his old friend Sir Anthony Strallan.
